InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort, located on the southern tip of Raa Atoll, has introduced a guided nurse shark snorkelling excursion for guests. Led by the resort’s marine team, the experience takes place in the resort’s lagoon and gives guests the chance to observe nurse sharks in their natural environment in a responsible and structured setting.
The excursion runs every Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 4 PM to 5 PM. Each session begins with a safety briefing from the marine team, and life jackets are provided for all participants. The team monitors conditions before each session, and guests enter the water only when shark activity and visibility meet the required standard. The lagoon site sits around ten minutes from the shore and offers calm, clear water that is accessible for swimmers of all abilities.
Once at the site, guests float quietly while nurse sharks move through the lagoon at their own pace. Nurse sharks are known for their calm behaviour, which makes the encounter manageable for beginners and children. As well as nurse sharks, the lagoon is home to rays and various fish species. The unhurried nature of the experience gives guests time to take in the surroundings without feeling rushed.
The excursion is priced at USD 120 per person, with a 25% reduction for guests under 12. The format works well for families travelling with children and for those who have not snorkelled before, making it a practical option for multigenerational groups.
The resort sits close to Baa Atoll’s UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and conservation is built into how the experience is run. All interactions with marine life are conducted with care for the surrounding habitat. Guests can also take part in coral restoration activities and reef protection initiatives at the resort to learn more about the local marine ecosystem.
