“Something doesn’t have to be new to feel current.”
Turkish pop icon Hande Yener is bringing a more conscious perspective to fashion through STAR Gene, the Amsterdam-based project transforming pieces from her personal fashion archive into a living and continuously evolving collection.
Known for more than 25 years of music, visual reinvention and a bold approach to personal style, Yener has built an extensive fashion archive featuring pieces worn on stage, in music videos and during defining moments throughout her career.
Rather than allowing these pieces to remain stored away, STAR Gene gives them the opportunity to become part of a new story, bringing together fashion, music, memory and circular fashion.
As STAR Gene begins reaching fashion audiences across Europe, the project is built around a simple idea: fashion does not always have to be new to feel relevant and contemporary.
“I don’t believe something has to be new to feel current. Sometimes a piece becomes even more meaningful because of the story it already carries and the opportunity it has to become part of a new one. For me, fashion is also about transformation. Reinterpreting what already exists can be much more exciting than constantly consuming something new,” says Yener.
FROM A POP CULTURE ARCHIVE TO CIRCULAR FASHION
Throughout her career, Hande Yener has used fashion as an extension of her artistic identity. Her constantly evolving style has accompanied different albums, performances and visual eras, transforming her wardrobe into a personal archive documenting more than 25 years of Turkish pop culture.
STAR Gene brings selected pieces from this archive back into circulation.
Rather than approaching fashion through constant replacement and consumption, the project focuses on reuse, longevity and reinterpretation. This approach also reflects the growing conversation around conscious consumption within the European fashion industry.
“We live in a time when everything is consumed incredibly quickly, and fashion is part of that cycle too. I love the idea that something can continue its journey instead of simply being forgotten. A garment that was once part of my story can now become part of someone else’s. That emotional continuity is very special to me,” says Yener.
A FASHION PROJECT FROM AMSTERDAM TO EUROPE
Launched in Amsterdam, STAR Gene places Hande Yener’s fashion archive within a new international context.
Each selected piece retains its own history and story while being given the opportunity to begin a second life with a new owner. In this way, the value of a garment is defined not by how recently it was produced, but by its identity, longevity and potential for reinterpretation.
For Yener, this approach also reflects her own understanding of personal style:
“Style has never meant simply wearing whatever is newest to me. What matters is how you transform something, how you make it your own and the attitude you bring to it. I think we need to rediscover that relationship with clothes.”
Through STAR Gene, Yener’s personal fashion archive moves beyond its original purpose, connecting the artist’s past with a broader conversation about how fashion can be consumed, preserved and rediscovered.
Yener concludes:
“Fashion changes, people change and I change too. But that doesn’t mean everything from the past has to disappear. Sometimes transformation simply means giving something a new context and allowing its story to continue.”
